about

It’s a genuine thrill when something new drops onto your lap. This compilation from Tropical Animals of Florence's post-2010 scene is a deep collection that paints the city of renaissance in dark, yet exciting, tones.

On ‘Akasha’ ring modulated stepped filters burble and fizz over a breathless exotic chant. Mystic Valley’s ‘First Sight’ brings to mind the opening of a DEEWEE 12” and some Ess O Ess stylings before a deep squelching sub kicks in the door and muscles in on Sean and Andrew’s next Tormorgen set. From chug to thud, Gaiden’s sophisticated techno/electro workout, ‘Star Seeker’ is a real beaut. 303s, 909s and chopped glitched-out vocals create a dense and rich piece of primetime dancefloor tackle.

‘White Land’ is Rhythm Section reimagined for a rave in Il Duomo. Clattering hats are given a lift in the mix to ensure maximum dancefloor hand movement, and yet the Peckham stylings soon give way to peak Panorama Bar pressure. Make no mistake: this is a serious heatseeker. The halfway point of the comp is marked by Elisa Bee who breaks out pristine FM goodness for ‘Spiritual Goodness’ whilst a deep round and rich bass tubthumps. To these ears, it sounds as if the track was recorded on a small suite of Volcas (Bass and FM?) One would love to know, as the kick on that wee drum machine is a monster…

I’ve been jonesing for great breakbeats since Beautiful Swimmers hipped me to that Max D edit on Warrior’s Dance and here Micheal Byrne’s ‘Babatti’ delivers in spades. The juxtaposition of savvy-as-fuck breaks and S.A.W era Aphex is a perfect counterpoint until the whole thing gives way drops into the tightest of grooves. Next up, ‘TAPETWENTYTWO’ is all about the capstan saturation. Red-lined kicks jostle ferociously with a nasty sample to create the soundtrack to skateboarding with Rezzett on your way to the Artemio Franchi.

Ricardo Baez - the label’s founder – flexes his techno muscle on his contribution ‘Loco por la Techno feat. Lonely Dancer’. It’s raw, raucous and (dare I say it?) anthemic. The hook worms its way into your ear and begs you to check when you are next going out. This is going to sound massive on a well put together sound system. ‘Mantras Lost’ keeps pace with a tight, dub techno sound whilst closer ‘Viaje Literario Edit Almeria’ by SPO, returns to the deep chug of the opening track.

Since 2017, NG Records - some 500km south of Florence - has been wowing us with the beautiful sophistication of the Neapolitan disco scene. Firenze’s Tropical Animals is now showing us the beautifully muscular sound of Tuscan techno. This is a superb collection of visceral, vibrant, urgent music which is screaming out to be heard: an absolute a shoe-in for a place in our top compilations of the year.
